To help you make the best decision on whether to rent or buy a lawn mower, we gathered quotes from 11 different rental shops across the United States. Below, you will find five charts comparing the costs of renting different types of lawn mowers from different companies. We’ve also outlined the pros and cons of renting vs. buying a lawn mower versus hiring a professional Lawn care company to do your work for You.
Here are 3 reasons to why renting a lawn mower would be beneficial for you:
- Cheaper to rent. If you don’t have the money to buy a riding mower but have a large 2+ acre lawn, you may rent one twice a year instead.
- Quality of product. Sure, you can buy a $200 lawn mower. But how long will it last? For $50 per day or less for a four-hour rental, you may rent a Honda self-propelled commercial-duty mower. It glides effortlessly over any grass and is a pleasure to use.
- Zero maintenance. You are not responsible for maintenance when you hire a lawn mower.
The Pros of Renting are:
- There’s no need to maintain it. You use it for a couple of hours, then return it to the rental shop. There are no hassles or concerns.
- It doesn’t take up any of your storage space in the garage or shed.
- Not only does it cost less to rent a lawn mower than to purchase one, but the quality of the rental is better.
The Cons of Renting are:
- You will have to remove the grass clippings yourself.
- If You need to mow often, the cost of renting can quickly add up.
- Whenever you need to rent a mower, you will have to drive out your rental shop – which may not be convenient if it is located far from where you live.
Lawn Mower Rental Costs
Here’s a table with the cost of a one-day lawn mower rental at various locations across the United States:

Here are some things to consider about the chart:
The electric lawn mower was only offered for rent at Aurora Rents, and it cost $50/ day.
After contacting 11 rental shops, we found that zero turn riding mowers were more common to be available for rent than riding tractors mowers. There were seven places where you could rent a zero turn, but only three had garden tractors.
The average gas self-propelled walk-behind mower costs $46/day to rent while the commercial-duty large cut width gas self-propelled is $90/day on average. The average cost of renting a zero turn riding tractor is significantly higher at $195/day, with garden tractor rentals averaging even higher at $205// day.

Now, let’s get into more detail about each style of lawn mower.
Renting a Self-propelled Push Mower

If you’re looking for a used lawn mower, most rental shops will offer either a Honda or Toro. These brands are frequently reviewed as being the most durable and reliable, so it makes sense that they would be offered more often than other brands.
You had the choice to rent for 4-hours, per day, per week or per month.
The costs of renting a 22-inch cutting width self-propelled Toro from Home Depot:
- $29/4-hrs
- $41/day
- $164/week
- $492/month
If you need to mow your lawn quickly, then it’s a bargain to pay $29 to use a lawn mower that costs over $1,000 for four hours.
Gas Powered Push Mower Rental Cost Chart
The chart below displays the daily rental cost for a self propelled gas lawn mower.

You might be wondering why Aztec Rental is less expensive than Aurora Rent. The only distinction is that Aztec provides you with a Toro brand, while Aurora offers you a Honda.
On average, these gas-powered self-propelled machines rented for $46 per day.
Electric Powered Push Mower Rental Cost Chart
Since only one rental shop offers an electric model for rent, there is no need to include a chart.
There are two reasons why you can’t find an electric model for rent:
- The battery models would need to be constantly recharged, which made them not worth the hassle.
- The corded models only cost $200 brand new, so we decided to only rent them out for $15/day max.
Renting a Riding Lawn Mower

If your lawn is more than 1/2 acre, you’ll need a riding mower. A push mower will take at least 1.5 hours to mow an acre, and emptying the grass bag or taking any rests aren’t included. With a riding mower, you can have fun mowing your grass.
Zero turn riding mowers were common for rent. Seven of the 11 places had them, while only three rented tractor-style riding mowers.
When you rent one, it will be either delivered to your home or pulled by a trailer.
Zero Turn Lawn Mower Rental Cost Chart
The main benefit of a zero-turn mower is that it allows you to turn and navigate around objects on your lawn. It has the ability to make 180-degree turns in a matter of seconds.

All the zero turn mower rentals were similar in style and cutting width, so I had a tough time finding distinctions between them. The only apparent difference was cost, which must have been due to location or company profit margins.
On average, zero turn riding lawn mowers can be rented for $195 per day.
Rental Cost Charts for Garden Tractors and Lawn Mowers
There were three locations where you could rent a garden tractor and they had more turns than zero. Take a look at the rental fee table:

On average, these garden tractor riding lawn mowers cost $205 per day to rent.
The Differences Between Renting for Commercial-Use and Home-Use
There was no difference in cost or deposit required whether you were renting a lawn mower for your business or for your backyard. In fact, we were never asked how we would use the mower.
Why would it matter?
You’re renting a lawn mower for the day. You use it to cut your grass for the day. That’s all there is to it.
Deposits and Damage?
You will be required to pay a deposit for every lawn mower you rent. The size of the deposit depends on which particular model you choose. For example, If the mower you rent costs $200/day, then your deposit will likely be$200/day as well.
In order to use the lawn mower, you will need to provide a valid drivers license and all your other pertinent information. If the lawn mower is damaged while in your care, and it is deemed that the damage was caused by you (for example, if you run over it with your car), then you will likely be required to pay for a replacement.
Return Condition Expectations
It’s the same as renting a car: you’re expected to return the lawn mower in the condition it was in when you received it.
- Full of gas
- Not covered in mud and grass clippings
- No major dents or scratches
You don’t need to clean the thing inside and out. Just return it in the same condition as when you received it.
Rent To Own or Lease Options
Some companies offer payment plans for lawn mowers.
- You might call it “rent to own,” but in reality, it’s just a lease.
- You pay a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly fee and gain ownership of the lawn mower after one year.
- You end up spending somewhat more (interest) in the long run, but if you don’t have the cash upfront, it can be a draw.
With Lowe’s ‘rent to own’ program, you can spread your payments out over 12 months with no interest, but the catch is that you end up paying about $100 more for a $1,000 lawn mower.
Cost To Hire A Lawn Care Company
Depending on your situation, it may be the best option to hire a professional lawn care company to come take care of your lawn on a regular basis. Yes, the kid down the street may mow your lawn for $20 but a professional lawn care company that will fertilize, aerate, mow and return every 2 weeks will cost $50 – $100 per month.
If a mower costs $50/day to rent and you mow your lawn once a month, then why not pay someone the same price and not do any of the work yourself.
