Lawnmower Maintenance Tips

It is said that in order to get any job done efficiently, it is important to have the best equipment. When you have the equipment, you need to maintain it as well. Similarly, if you are somebody who plans on mowing their lawn by themselves, then you need a lawnmower which you are comfortable using and also, you need to be able to maintain it so that it ends being durable equipment.

By following these steps, you can maintain your lawnmower.

a) Replacing the spark plugs

Spark plugs can last for a long period of time in a well-tuned lawnmower. However, they might face some problems due to the air, fuel, and debris. In order to make sure that they maintain the fuel efficiency and performance of the lawnmower, you need to keep a check on them. You have to clean or replace the spark plugs, according to your need. All you need to do is to disconnect the spark plugs, and then clean the area around it. It is quite possible that there may be dirt deposits and even deposit of fine clippings. You can remove the spark plug with the help of a socket. After you are done with that, you can clean any deposit in the plug with a wire and a spray-on plug cleaner. Make sure that there aren’t any hard materials stuck inside the plug or else it will affect the fuel efficiency adversely. If you feel that your lawnmower is consuming a lot of fuel then you certainly need to check up on the spark plug.

b) Sharpening the blades

Another most important step is the sharpening of the lawnmower blades. The cut that you get depends upon the blade. If the blades are dull then the cut will be uneven, the grass will not actually be cut but it will be broken which is going to have an adverse impact on the plant. If you want to sharpen your blades on your own then the first thing that you need to do is to unplug the spark plugs so that it is safe to remove the blades. Now you can take the blade off with the help of a wrench, once the blade is off you sharpen it with a sharpening stone. This job requires a lot of precision and care. If you feel that you have no prior experience then you should get it done by some professional instead of doing it yourself.

c) Checking the air filter

Different components of the lawnmower, require maintenance individually. So, you need to keep a check on the air filter as well. the air filter is a component which is socked in oil and ensures fuel efficiency. If the air filter is dirty then you will notice that the engine of the lawnmower will not work smoothly and at one point, it will stop working at all. So, to make sure that the engine works properly, make sure that you clean the air filter. The easiest method is to clean the air filter is by soaking it in soapy water and then squeezing the unwanted materials out of it. Once it is in good, you can put it back in the mower. Again, you can do this step on your own, if you have some experience of air filters in the past but if not then it is better to get it done by a professional.

d) Refuelling

Before you start lawn mowing, it is important that you refuel your mower because in the middle of the mowing, it will get hot and refuelling at that time can be very dangerous. So, to prevent any sort of damage, make sure that you refuel the mower on time. This will also save a lot of your time. You don’t have to stop in the middle of mowing to refuel and it will save you from worries also. So, every time you see long strands of grass, go to the lawnmower first, refuel it and then do everything else.

e) Checking the tires

You need to check the air in the tires of the lawnmower. The tires must be fully inflated. If they are not fully inflated then the mower will not move around properly and will get more damaged, the tire may be ruptured because of it. So, every now and then, when you plan on mowing your lawn, make sure that you check up on the tires as well.

f) Checking the oil levels

Proper oil levels are also important to ensure the efficient working of the lawnmower. You will observe that lower oil levels will put more pressure on the engine, it will reduce the efficiency, the engine will not work smoothly, the fuel efficiency will also be affected. Eventually, it is likely that you will observe a drastic decline in lawnmower performance. So, make sure that you keep the oil levels in check.

g) Cleaning of the base

Now the most important step is the general cleaning of the base of the lawnmower. The lower is the part that is most exposed to dirt and clippings, there is a chance that it will get stuck to the base of the lawnmower. If a lot of material gets stuck to the base, then it will impact the performance of the lawnmower. First, you need to get out the blade to get hold of all the dirt and unwanted materials deposited to the base. Then with the help of any brush, you can pull out the deposited materials. Make sure that you do this step more often as compared to other steps.

h) Fuel removal and removing the battery at the end of the season

Then comes a time where you may not plan on mowing the yards anymore, at this point you need to make sure that you remove the battery to prevent it from being ruined, store it in a safe place for future use. Also, you need to make sure that you remove the fuel that might already be present in the lawnmower. Keeping the fuel at the end of the season can be dangerous and can also be harmful to the machine. Get rid of both these things for the season and you are all set to store the lawnmower in your store and it will be as good as new in the next season.

All these steps are extremely important for the maintenance of the lawnmower, following these steps will keep the lawnmower in good condition and increases its durability. However, there is a chance that you might not be able to follow all the steps on your own. So, you can do whatever is easy for you but do not follow any step which you are not confident about because your safety is the first priority. If you have prior experience then you can follow all the steps on your own but if you do not have prior experience then instead of taking a risk, get it done from a professional.

By following all these steps, you will note that the lawnmower is working efficiently, it will give you a fine cut and fuel efficiency. You will certainly enjoy evenly cut grass and that too by yourself.
